Sandisk punts next gen SSD

Sandisk has unveiled the next generation of Solid State Drives (SSDs) aimed at the
phenomenally successful netbook market.


Available in 8, 16, 32 and 64GB flavours, Sandisk's new pSSD drives feature SATA interfaces that allow them to be used as drop-in replacements for standard rotational HDDs.


According to Sandisk, the technology on which the Second Generation Modular SSDs is based uses a patented All Bit Line (ABL) architecture with advanced proprietary programming algorithms and multi-level data storage management schemes to yield MLC NAND flash memory chips that don't sacrifice performance or reliability.


The new drives are currently being built in Japan by a partnership between Sandisk and Toshiba, and they should be out in the wild by February.


No prices are available at time of writing, but Sandisk marketeers tell us that they will be 'aggressivley priced' whatever that means.

"Vista Capable" suit hobbled

A judge has ruled that the US case against Microsoft's 'Vista Capable' program can not proceed as a single class action lawsuit.


The ruling, issued by US district judge Marsha Pechman, denies the class-action status of the suit and leaves the plaintiffs to pursue individual cases against the company rather than a single case on behalf of a large number of plaintiffs.


Because the ruling leaves just six individuals to pursue separate cases, the decision is being widely regarded as a victory for Microsoft.


The case centers around Microsoft's classification of certain PCs as being "Vista Capable," a distinction meant to show which machines would be able to run its latest operating system.


Because there were several different versions of Windows Vista released, the branding did not specifically define which systems could run all of the new features in the operating system.


The case has lead to several embarrassing disclosures from Microsoft, including concern over the program both internally and from external retailers and sales partners.

Skype expands per-minute access to Aussie hotspots

Aussie Mac owners can now use their Skype credit to pay for per-minute access to around 360 wireless hotspots nationwide.

The new feature is called Skype Access and is available in the Skype 2.8 Beta for Mac OS X, released today.

Users of ‘other operating systems’ will find the capability built into a new version of their Skype client ‘sometime in 2009’, the company said in a statement.

Skype Access works by actively scanning for available Boingo hotspots and presenting a pop-up dialogue box displaying the price per minute to use the Boingo network.

It theoretically means Skype users can make calls from a wireless hotspot on a per-minute basis without signing up to a full wireless plan, such as Boingo's US$59.00 per month ' Global ' offering.

Boingo currently has agreements in place covering access to in excess of 360 hotspots in Australia.

Most are owned and operated by Azure Wireless, although independent hotspots also exist.

Both Skype and Boingo are said to have set a flat, global rate of US$0.19 per minute for network access, ‘which will vary based on currency’. There are no connection fees or monthly charges to use Skype Access, the firms said.

A Skype spokesperson told iTnews that the cost per-minute of using Skype Access for Boingo hotspots in Australia is $0.29 per minute (excluding VAT).

IE7, Firefox get security fixes

The two most popular browsers on the market each received security updates on Wednesday.

Both Mozilla and Microsoft posted patches to address flaws in the latest versions of Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox.

The Mozilla patch addresses some eight security flaws in versions 2 and 3 of the browser. Among the fixes are several vulnerabilities which could be targeted in cross-site scripting attacks, as well as one which could be exploited to remotely execute code.

Ironically, the update also brings with it a drop in security protection for some Firefox users. The 2.0.0.19 update signifies the end of security support for the browser.

Additionally, Mozilla will be shutting down anti-phishing protections for the Firefox 2 due the Google ending support for the browser's phishing site blacklist.

Mozilla is advising any users who haven't already upgraded to the latest version of the browser to do so.

Meanwhile, Microsoft issued an out-of-cycle update for Internet Explorer 7. The patch was first announced yesterday in response to a series of attacks in the wild on an unpatched flaw.

The update addresses a vulnerability in the way IE7 handles certain text files. If exploited, an attacker could use the flaw to remotely execute code on a targeted system.

The release comes just eight days after Microsoft issued its monthly patch for separate flaws in IE, Office and Windows.
