Trend Micro signs up with BigFix

Content security vendor Trend Micro sought to broaden its appeal to large enterprises today by announcing a partnership deal with security management firm BigFix that will see Trend's endpoint security tools integrated with the BigFix platform.

The first of these tools, Trend Micro Web Protection Module, will integrate with the BigFix platform to allow IT managers in large enterprises to easily deploy, manage and control their endpoints, thanks to the platform's single-agent architecture, according to Trend Micro.

The BigFix platform also features consolidated single-console views and the power to scale the solution to cope with over 10,000 endpoints, the company said.

Andrew Hanson, research analyst at IDC, argued that the management capabilities of endpoint protection suites is a substantial differentiator.

"By combining multiple correlated technologies into a single management framework, endpoint protection platforms have the promise of increasing security while lowering complexity, cost and administrative overhead," he said.

Google improves password security

Google has unveiled new administration tools designed to improve the use of passwords, in order to boost security for customers using its Google Apps hosted enterprise software offerings.

"Helping businesses, schools and organisations to keep information safe is critical, and we've been providing Google Apps customers with a spectrum of capabilities to help ensure that only authorised users have access to information accessible from the cloud," wrote Eran Feigenbaum, director of security for Google Apps, in a blog post.

"These include Secure Sockets Layer options, single sign-on capabilities, and administrative controls for how widely users can share and publish information from Google Docs, Google Sites and Google Calendar."

Google has also added a new layer of security with administrator controls that allow enterprises to define the length of passwords and analyse their strength.

The company offered a number of password selection tips. "The first step in protecting your online privacy is creating a safe password, i.e. one that a computer program or persistent individual won't easily be able to guess in a short period of time," the advice reads.

"To help you choose a secure password, we've created a feature that lets you know visually how safe your password is as soon as you create it."

One example, which may seem obvious, is "not to use a password listed as an example of how to pick a good password".

The relative strength of a password can be determined automatically in real time as Google's account authentication system constantly analyses password use and attempts to break them.

Pentagon recalls USB sticks over virus fears

The Pentagon has banned the use of portable USB drives after fears that they are being used to propagate viruses.
No official statement has been released, but internal emails have shown that the Pentagon wants to recall all USB sticks distributed to employees. Warnings emerged last week of a major outbreak of malware targeting USB drives.


"For most organisations, completely banning USB Flash drives would restrict the productivity and efficiency of end users," said Jason Holloway, sales manager for Northern Europe at portable storage firm SanDisk.


"USB drives are productivity enhancing, but the risk of malware infection must be stopped with layers of security, such as hardware-based USB encryption and password protection, and virus scanning on the drive itself."


While refusing to confirm or deny the recall, Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman acknowledged the global spread of USB malware."


This is not solely a department problem, this is not solely a government problem," he told Associated Press.

Virus propagation via USB stick is a throwback to the first virus techniques in which floppy discs were used to carry the code. But for an organisation like the Pentagon to take such a drastic step, the spread of the code must be wider than usual.
