Google improves enterprise search offering

Google has enhanced its enterprise search offering to allow businesses to incorporate new pages into web site search results more quickly.

The new On-Demand Indexing feature offers site owners an 'Index Now' button, which Google claims can be used to quickly update search results when more web content is added.

Previously, publishers had to wait for Google to automatically update the index on an ad-hoc basis.

One of the first users of On-Demand Indexing is Adobe, which is using the solution to keep its new online Adobe Community Help site up to date."We are now able to index thousands of new pages and make them available to millions of users worldwide within hours," said Tanya Wendling, Adobe Learning Resources senior director.

Large companies with popular web sites that are frequently crawled by Google will not see a significant difference to search result quality by using On-Demand Indexing, according to a source close to the firm. But web sites that are indexed less regularly should notice an improvement to the relevancy of their search service, the source said.

Google has also published a set of best practice guidelines for web site owners to maximise their site's performance on Google, including better title and description meta tags, URL structure, site navigation, content creation and anchor text.

"We plan on updating the guide at regular intervals with new optimisation suggestions and to keep the technical advice current," said Brandon Falls, from Google's Search Quality Team, in a blog posting.

ARM gets flashy with Adobe

Adobe follows Ubuntu by teaming up with chip designer ARM to improve the web on mobile phones and netbooks.

Adobe Systems has teamed up with chip designer ARM to improve the way that firm’s web-friendly software works on mobile phones using ARM chips.

US-based Adobe - which makes tools for the Internet's most popular video software and made possible the rise of sites such as Google's YouTube - will optimise its Flash Player 10 and Adobe AIR for mobile phones based on ARM processors.

The agreement follows one last week between ARM and Canonical, the sponsor of open source operating system Ubuntu, The pair will develop a version of the OS which is optimised for ARM’s netbook-friendly architecture.

"The release of a full Ubuntu desktop distribution supporting latest ARM technology will enable rapid growth," Ian Drew, vice president of marketing for ARM, said last week.
"The always-on experience available with mobile devices is rapidly expanding to new device categories such as netbooks, laptops and other internet connected products. Working with Canonical will pave the way for the development of new features and innovations to all connected platforms."

Of the Adobe deal, ARM's marketing chief Ian Drew told Reuters: "It's all about bringing the Internet experience everywhere."

Most of the world's biggest handset makers, including Nokia and Samsung as well as Apple and BlackBerry maker Research in Motion, have processors designed by UK-based ARM at their core.

The two companies said in a statement today a series of ARM-based processors for mobile phones, set-top boxes and other devices adapted for Adobe's Flash 10 and AIR should be available in the second half of 2009.

Google Earth revives ancient Rome

Google has added a new twist to its popular 3D map tool, Google Earth, offering millions of users the chance to visit a virtual ancient Rome.

Google has reconstructed the sprawling city - inhabited by more than one million people as long ago as AD320.

Users can zoom around the map to visit the Forum of Julius Caesar, stand in the centre of the Colosseum or swoop over the Basilica.

Researchers behind the project say it adds to five centuries of knowledge.

"This is another step in creating a virtual time machine," said Bernard Frischer of the University of Virginia, which worked with Google on the Roman reconstruction.

"The project is a continuation of five centuries of research by scholars, architects and artists since the Renaissance, who have attempted to restore the ruins of the ancient city with words, maps and images," he said.

Also involved was Past Perfect Productions, which reconstructs archaeological and historical sites through virtual reality.

Joel Myers, the firm's chief executive, said: "Cultural heritage, although based in the past, lives in the present, as it forms our identity.

"It is therefore our responsibility to ensure its conservation, to nourish it and make it accessible, with the objective of promoting global understanding. Ancient Rome in 3D is a major step towards this goal," he added.

'Ideal allies'

Ancient Rome is the first historical city to be added to Google Earth. Google's blog said the model contains more than 6,700 buildings, with more than 250 place marks linking to key sites in a variety of languages.

"Whether you are a student taking your first ancient history class, a historian who spends your life researching ancient civilisations, or just a history buff, access to this 3D model in Google Earth will help everyone learn more about ancient Rome," said Bruce Polderman, Google Earth 3D production manager.

Within ancient Rome there are some 200 buildings scholars know a lot about - classified as Class 1 -which Google says have been rendered as faithfully as possible.

The 3D models are based on a physical model of the city called the Plastico di Roma Antica.
The model was created by archaeologists and model-makers between 1933 to 1974 and housed in a special gallery in Rome's Museum of Roman Civilisation.

The new map was unveiled at an event in the Italian capital, and the modern day Mayor of Rome, Gianni Alemanno, praised the project.

"It's an incredible opportunity to share the stunning greatness of ancient Rome, a perfect example of how the new technologies can be ideal allies of our history, archaeology and cultural identity," Mr Alemanno said.

More than 400 million people have downloaded Google Earth since it was launched in June.

Hewlett-Packard is getting small. A gaggle of miniaturized notebooks, announced this week and collectively called the Mini 1000, will be available in various configurations that begin at $379. The group is described as less capable than full-fledged laptops.

Most models operate with Windows XP, including a $399 version available this week, fitted out with an 8.9-inch screen and an 8-gigabyte solid-state drive. For $50 more, buyers can get a 10.2-inch screen without increasing the case size (10.3 by 6.6 by 0.99 inches). Other variations include larger-capacity solid-state and revolving hard drives.

A Linux version with mobile applications will be $379 when it ships in January. All have Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth is an option. A cellular-data version is due out in December. Weighing in at 2.25 to 2.4 pounds, depending on screen size, these devices can almost go from shoulder bag to purse — or even a generously sized pocket. MARTY
